Headaches, we’ve all had them, and at times we’ve all struggled to get rid of them. There are many different types of headaches, as well as many causes. Types of common headaches include Migraines, which are debilitating and are usually brought on by some sort “trigger” like flashing lights, a certain smell, or a type of food (“triggers will vary from person to person). Tension headaches are usually caused by a stiff neck and increased stress. Cervicogenic headaches are specifically caused by dysfunctional structures within the neck. There are also headaches that result from head trauma, such as from an athletic activity or a motor vehicle accident. Studies have shown that most (but not all) headaches do in fact share a relationship with the neck, most likely due to restricted function of the neck.
What can help?
- Chiropractic Care: Studies have also shown that chiropractic adjustments can be an effective form of treatment for certain types of headaches.
- Life Style Changes: If stress is your “trigger” for tension or other types of headaches, try exercise, yoga, or other types of relaxing activities. They might help reduce your stress levels, and headaches.
- Hydration: Yes, this has become a common occurrence in our blogs, but we can not stress enough the importance of staying properly hydrated. By drinking 6-8 glasses of water a day you can reduce the chances of becoming dehydrated and thus decrease the chances of suffering headaches.
- Diet: Sometimes, especially with migraine headaches, there can be a certain food that can trigger a headache. Try to identify types of food that trigger your headaches and then try to avoid them as best you can.
It is very important for the chiropractor to do a thorough history and exam on a patient experiencing headaches, so that a proper diagnosis can be made. In some cases where headaches are “sudden and severe”, occur after trauma/injury, or cause nausea or vomiting, an immediate referral to the emergency room is required. If you suffer from headaches come in for your free spinal exam and free chiropractic treatment to help you get on the road to wellness.

I know it’s been a week since the Super Bowl, but I came across a great article. The article discusses the crucial role of Chiropractors with the NFL and especially during the Super Bowl. I love hearing about Chiropractic in the news. If professional athletes feel an adjustment is important to their athletic abilities and for their body to function at 100%, why doesn’t everybody else. Get your free spinal exam today and get adjusted!!!!

A recent study in the British Medical Journal online (www.bmj.com) finds that eating foods that were fried in either olive or sunflower oil is not linked to heart disease or premature death. In a Mediterranean country where olive and sunflower oils are the most commonly used fats for frying, and where large amounts of fried foods are consumed both at and away from home, no association was observed between fried food consumption and the risk of coronary heart disease or death. The study was authored by Professor Pilar Guallar-Castillion from Autonomous University of Madrid, surveyed the cooking methods of over 40,000 adults from age 29-59 over the course of 11 years. This flies in the face of common wisdom and I highly suggest you spend a few minutes reading the article yourself.
Maybe it isn’t so much the cooking methods, but what you use for cooking. But that’s for you to decide. Read the article before you make any changes to your diet. http://www.bmj.com/press-releases/2012/01/25/food-fried-olive-or-sunflower-oil-not-linked-heart-disease

I have been hearing from more and more patients about hitting the slopes! Ski and snowboarding season is truly upon us. That means fresh air, lot of fun and exercise. Unfortunately for some, it also means injury. Many a chiropractor are kept busy during the winter months treating skiing injuries and boarding injuries. I would like to help you stay injury free this ski season. As such, here are 6 easy tips to keeping ski injuries away.
Six Tips to an Injury Free Ski Season:
- Professional Instruction. Don’t be cheap. Yes, a day at the slopes is expensive, but if you are new to skiing or it’s been a while don’t scrimp on the lessons. You’ve got a friend who’s a really good skier and promises to “show you the ropes?” Being good at something doesn’t mean you’re a good teacher. You need to know what you’re doing on the hill or you’re just asking for trouble.
- Know your limits. You’ve had your lessons and you know how to ski or board. Nothing can stop you! You’re friends are encouraging you to try the black diamond run, saying it’s “easy.” It’s best to know your limits.Tackling a run that’s above your ability is a god way to get in trouble.
- Warm up. Sounds basic, doesn’t it? Yet most people don’t do it. Cold muscle is less flexible. Make a quick turn and you can tear the muscle or it can pull on your joint. Wear appropriate clothing. Do some basic stretches before you head up and do a couple of easy runs before you tackle a more technical run.
- Core Stability. Skiing and boarding require a lot of torsional (twisting) movements to your body. This is not an action that most people do in the gym. Think about it. On all those cardio machines we keep our bodies straight. When lifting weights we keep our bodies straight. Then we head out to the hill and twist our bodies and wonder why our back hurts when we’re “in such great shape.” You need to do some core stability work before and during the ski season. Join a yoga class, a pilates class or one of your gym’s core stability classes. Find which one you enjoy the most and stick with it.
- Pay attention to fatigue. It’s a familiar story in our chiropractic clinic. You’ve been out all day having a blast and decide to go for one last run. That’s when the injury happens. As your muscles fatigue, they do their job poorly. Balance, agility and stability are affected. To remedy this, take regular breaks and keep hydrated /eat through the day. Be honest with yourself, when you’re tired you should be done for the day.
- Chiropractic. You didn’t expect a chiropractor to not write about chiropractic, did you? Chiropractic is not only a big part of injury treatment, it can also be an important part of injury prevention. Lack of joint mobility puts the body at risk of injury. Before you head out to the slopes, come by our office at Heuser Chiropractic for you free spinal exam to make sure your spine is mobile and ready to ski or board!
